Creating a Safe Haven: How Clients Can Ensure a Safe Workplace for Support Workers

  • September 27, 2023
  • Blog

As the calendar turns to October, we are reminded of the importance of workplace safety during National Safe Work Month. While workplace safety is typically associated with traditional office environments and factories, it’s crucial to recognise that safety extends beyond these settings. Our clients’ homes become workplaces for our dedicated support workers in home care. Ensuring a safe workplace for them is not only a legal responsibility but also an essential part of our commitment to supporting every client to live their best life.

Home as a Workplace

In the world of home care, our support workers are unsung heroes. They provide essential services that allow clients to maintain their independence, age gracefully, and manage their abilities while remaining in the comfort of their homes. However, it’s important to acknowledge that these homes are not just living spaces but also workplaces for our support workers.

Support workers step into clients’ homes to provide various forms of assistance, from personal care to household chores and companionship. As such, the safety and well-being of the client and the support worker must be top priorities.

The Shared Responsibility

Creating a safe workplace in the context of home care is a shared responsibility. It involves a collaborative effort between our organisation, support workers, and clients. Here are some essential tips for clients to maintain a safe workplace for our support workers:

Clear Communication

Open and honest communication between clients and support workers is the cornerstone of safety. Clients should communicate their needs, preferences, and any potential hazards in the home environment. Likewise, support workers should share their concerns and observations.

Keep Walkways Clear

Cluttered or obstructed walkways pose a significant risk of accidents. Clients can help by keeping hallways, staircases, and common areas clear of obstacles, such as loose rugs or misplaced furniture. Maintaining good lighting in these areas is also essential.

Proper Equipment and Supplies

Clients should ensure that necessary equipment and supplies, such as mobility aids, personal care items, and cleaning materials, are readily accessible and in good working condition. This minimises the risk of accidents and helps support workers provide efficient care.

Infection Control

Especially in times of health crises, clients should be vigilant about infection control measures. Following recommended hygiene practices can help protect the client and the support worker.

Our Vision: Supporting Every Client to Live Their Best Life

At Neighbourcare, our vision is to support every client to live their best life. Maintaining a safe and secure home workplace for our support workers is crucial to achieving this vision.

When clients actively create a safe work environment, they contribute to the well-being of our dedicated support workers. A safe workplace promotes trust, enhances the quality of care provided, and fosters a positive and respectful relationship between clients and support workers.

Moreover, a safe workplace aligns perfectly with our vision by enabling our support workers to deliver the best possible care. When support workers can focus on their tasks without worrying about safety hazards, they can provide clients with more compassionate and effective assistance.

This, in turn, helps clients live their best lives by promoting independence, dignity, and overall well-being.

Conclusion

National Safe Work Month is a timely reminder that workplace safety knows no boundaries. With home care, clients are pivotal in ensuring a safe workplace for our support workers. By following the tips outlined in this article, clients fulfil their responsibilities and contribute to our organisation’s vision—supporting every client to live their best life.

Remember, a safe workplace is not just a legal requirement; it’s a testament to our commitment to excellence in home care.

Neighbourcare proudly stands by our clients and support workers, ensuring we create a safe, comfortable, nurturing home care environment for all.
